There are basically four steps to getting dental implants. The first step is a consultation with your dentist. Most general dentists are trained in dental implant surgery, but you may need to go to an oral surgeon or a periodontist. You need to be in good health without any serious medical issues in order to be a good candidate for dental implant surgery.

The second step is to get diagnostic tests like X-rays or a CT scan to make a 3-D model of your mouth. This helps ensure that the implant will fit comfortably.

The third step is the actual surgery, which entails a hole being drilled into your jaw to fit the implant. A temporary abutment and crown are put in place.

The fourth step is to get the permanent abutment and crown. This happens after a few months, to make sure the implant has been integrated into the jawbone. You also need time to heal.
